This afternoon I had the privilege of presenting some of the latest trends in online social networking and consumer generated media to the dean and management team of the University Stellenbosch.
They already do a great deal online in their MyMaties.com portal and want to ensure that they stay at the forefront of new media communications in the educational institution environment.
As part of my presentation, I wanted to update the management team on the usage of Mxit and was once again surprised to hear how this phenomenon has exploded:
* 6,6 million registered users
* 9 million log-ins per day
* 200 million sms’s sent per month
* 10 000 to 14 000 new registrations per month
* 7 million ads per day
With these figures, how can anyone still doubt the growth of the cellphone as a medium for communication and networking among the youth of South Africa?
