Flash vs SEO, the saga continues….

We all know that in terms of SEO, Flash is considered less than perfect, and completely Flash driven sites are considered by some in the SEO world as a complete ‘No no’, however the times are changing.

Whilst Flash might not be perfectly indexed, when we marry Flash, Ajax and server-side scripting we can start to really achieve great results. Google can index dynamic text and content passed through XML etc, and with new innovations like Asual’s SWFAddress allowing SEO friendly URL’s to navigate Flash, as well as adding the ever so important Back button functionality often missing in Flash sites.

Whilst the battle of SEO vs Flash continues, I predict that it will not be long before we can have our cake and eat it…

Hey boet!! good post. From a SEO point of view, Flash has always been somewhat of a headache when trying to explain to clients…, “err, no, your flashy site looks awesome, but no-one’s gonna find it via a search engine”… I am sure I am not the only SEO who would love to see Flash content being indexed (or maybe I am?), however, i don’t see this happening soon. As a SEO I would love to see this happen, but I am not sure that the new innovations like Asual’s SWFAddress allowing SEO friendly URL’s to navigate Flash is going to do the trick. I am not sure how search engines are going to respond or how quickly and how easily the content can be found and indexed. JavaScript, being around for some time, took the spiders a while to get through the muck to actually index anything. But because I don’t despise Flash at all, i am eagerly waiting to see what is going to happen…

SWFAddress, isnt the solution, but I believe it definately plays a part in building a solution. I think we can expect big things with SEO and Flash in the next 2-3 years, so by CS5 and Flash Player 13 we might just be seeing full Flash sites burst well beyond the realm of Microsites… Flash and Flex have the capabilities to run full e-Commerce sites etc, (well with help from their server-side scripting friends), I think its just the SEO side thats holding it back… but watch this space…
