Google unveils prototype of ‘Android’ software platform for mobile phones

  •

Do you browse the Web on your mobile phone? Do you find it to be a frustrating experience with slow download speeds? Well, hold on to your hat, that may soon change.

For some time know Google made no secret of their plans to dominate the wireless world and talked about producing a software platform for mobile devices, called Android.

Well, the wait is over, at least for a while… Google showed off their ‘Android’ software platform at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Having launched Android last year, Google is hoping to establish its software as the standard operating system for mobile phones and to improve the quality of web-browsing for handset users.

According to a technology research firm analyst, it looks very promising. It also means that there will be more tracking to see trends for commercial devices in the second half of 2008.

The idea is that Android will lead to radically improved functionality, notably for web browsing, meaning more people will use their mobile phones for internet surfing and other applications.

Android is open-source which opens another world to developers to create killer applications.

Like with anything, Google faces stiff competition with Nokia and its Symbian system, US software giant Microsoft with their Windows system for mobiles and a separate consortium who is working on an open-source Linux solution.

The future of Android and that of the rival platforms is going to be very exciting indeed. I am convinced we’ll enjoy the ride!

iPhone – Beauty and Brains…

  •

The iPhone is probably the most talked about mobile device ever, in the United States as well as globally. The phone which is also a music and video player as well as an internet browser is also a work of art, a gadget that tops the “A-list” interms of accessories. Whilst we in South Africa have to wait till the third quarter of 2008 to own one, the demand in the U.S. has been unprecedented.

iPhone has topped the list as the most searched term on Google, the Top 10 search list for 2007 is:
Iphone (Mobile phone, music and video player and Internet browser device)
Webkinz (Online virtual pets for kids)
TMZ (Celebrity news)
Transformer toys (From the popular movie “Transformers”)
YouTube (Online video sharing)
Club Penguin (Networking site for children)
MySpace (Social networking)
Heroes (Popular TV series)
Facebook (Social networking)
Anna Nicole Smith (Late reality TV star)

Because such an object of beauty is also an amazing feat of the latest technology, I will definitely be on the list to get one, after all…. a savvy girl chooses the “right” accessories.
I came upon an article in the Time magazine last week, the picture used (above) to depict what the iPhone can do says it all.

So, are you gonna get one?

Facebook is not a fad….

  •

facebook is about to hit 400,000 members in the South African network, sitting at 399,294 at this very moment. The growth in the last two weeks, in SA network has been phenomenal. On Sunday, 14th October there were 360,000 members… in 13 days the network has grown by 11%. There are currently around 50 million active members worldwide.

Many cynics of social networking sites say that facebook is just a “fad” and members will soon move onto something else, but with the continual renewal of applications and the easy-to-use format which provides a phenomenal platform for communicating with friends online, this is one “fad” that aint going anywhere.

To add credibility to this statement, a deal has just been concluded with Microsoft who have agreed to invest $240 million into facebook for a 1.6 percent stake in the company; this then values the site at around $15 billion. Under this agreement Microsoft will be the exclusive third-party advertising partner until 2011; this says to me that Microsoft do not see this social networking site as a “fad”; they beat Yahoo and Google to the deal table, who were also in talks to acquire an interest in the company.

facebook will be making a major announcement on the 6th November, in New York, regarding a new way of advertising online which enables companies to better target ad placement ensuring that they can block unwanted associations. This announcement happens to be at the same time as the Adtech “business of modern marketing” conference is being held.

The US online advertising industry is currently at around $40 billion and analysts predict that it will double in size within three years; with online advertsing in South Africa said to be at around R200 million for 2007 we have alot of “catching up” to do and marketers need to understand the value of social networking sites…..these are places that lots of people do spend there precious time out of choice and will continue to do so. facebook has also announced recently that 50% of their members are over 25 years of age, so it is not just a youth site anymore.

…..I know where I would be planning to spend some of my marketing budget….
